Your Guide to Finding Balance This Summer: Tips for Big Sisters

Hey Big Sisters! 💗

Summer is finally here, and for those of us who endure the cold for most of the year, it feels like we need to squeeze in all the activities possible. From planning summer trips to family gatherings, it’s go-go-go all season long. While it can be so much fun, let’s be real—sometimes, it can be exhausting.

This month, I've been intentionally moving at a slower pace, and I want to share some tips on how we can balance the non-stop summer energy with the need to decompress and relax. 🌸

1. Prioritize Your Needs

First and foremost, it’s essential to prioritize your needs. You don’t have to attend every event or meet up with everyone. It’s okay to say no and carve out time for yourself. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. ☕️

2. Plan Downtime

Just like you plan your trips and activities, make sure to plan your downtime! Schedule days where you do nothing but rest and recharge. Use this time to read, watch your favourite shows, or simply lounge in the sun. I try to plan at least 1-2 days a month where I have nothing planned and really just go with the flow guilt-free (a.k.a. my do-nothing days).

3. Set Boundaries

Communicate with your family and friends about your need for rest. Let them know that while you love spending time with them, you also need time for yourself. This tip is especially hard for those of us who are people pleasers or connect our value to what we can do for others. Setting boundaries helps everyone (including you) understand and respect your need for balance. It may feel difficult at first but will get easier over time. Always ask yourself “Is saying yes to this, saying no to myself?”

4. Embrace Slow Living

Embrace the concept of slow living this summer. Focus on being present and enjoying the moment rather than rushing from one activity to the next. Take leisurely walks, have picnics in the park, or enjoy a quiet morning coffee. We host monthly picnic meetups with Big Sisters Club with for those of you looking for a low-to-no-cost way to reconnect or meet other BSC members, make new friends, and more → Check them out on our Events Page!

5. Create a Summer Routine

Having a routine can help balance fun activities with rest. Incorporate moments of self-care into your daily routine, whether it’s a morning meditation, an afternoon nap, or an evening skincare ritual. This one can may feel difficult to maintain but start small and build from there. Or, decide what routine is more beneficial to your well-being and protect it! (For me, that’s my Sunday reset & meal prep routine)

6. Find Joy in the Simple Things

Sometimes, the simplest activities can bring the most joy. Going for a hike, visit a local farmer’s market, or have a backyard BBQ. These low-key activities can be incredibly fulfilling and restorative. Not every summer activity has to be expensive to have a good time! I always have a little “I think I like this little life” moment when I’m browsing a garden centre.

7. Listen to Your Body

Lastly, listen to your body. If you’re feeling tired, take a break. If you need a nap, go lay down somewhere. Your body knows what it needs, and it’s essential to honour those signals.

By balancing your time between activities and rest, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer without feeling overwhelmed. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you and ensuring you have time to recharge.

Big sisters, remember that you’re doing amazing—keep shining and taking care of yourselves! 💕

I hope these tips help you find that sweet spot between enjoying all the summer fun and taking care of your well-being. You deserve it! 🌞✨
